Amino Acid Supplements: L-Arginine, L-Glutamine and L-Leucine Explained

N7-Neo Metabolism Blend food supplement

Amino acids sound technical. They are not. They are simply the building blocks of the protein in your everyday food. Here is a friendly guide to three of them, and where they sit in your daily capsule.

N7-Neo Metabolism Blend contains L-arginine, L-glutamine and L-leucine as part of its seven-ingredient formula. You can see the full product on the N7-Neo UK page. This guide explains what each amino acid is, in plain British English.

What are amino acids?

Amino acids are small organic molecules. Link them together in chains and you get protein. Your body, and every animal and plant, uses them as building blocks. There are around twenty that matter for human nutrition.

Some are called essential, which means we must get them from food. Others the body can make itself. Nutrition scientists often group them like this:

GroupMeaningExamples
EssentialMust come from foodL-leucine
Non-essentialThe body can make themL-glutamine
Conditionally essentialNeeded more in certain situationsL-arginine

The letter L simply describes the form that occurs naturally in food and in the body.

Where do amino acids come from in a normal UK diet?

From protein foods, which most of us eat every day. A varied British diet usually covers it well.

A supplement is an extra. It never replaces a good plate of food.

What is L-arginine?

L-arginine is an amino acid found in protein-rich foods such as meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, nuts and seeds. In supplements it is commonly used as L-arginine hydrochloride (HCl), a stable form that suits capsules.

Each N7-Neo capsule contains 100 mg of L-arginine HCl.

What is L-glutamine?

L-glutamine is one of the most plentiful amino acids in the body. It is found in foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy, tofu, beans and some vegetables. Food supplement makers usually produce it through fermentation of plant sugars, then purify it into a fine white powder.

Each N7-Neo capsule contains 51 mg of L-glutamine.

What is L-leucine?

L-leucine is an essential amino acid, so it must come from food. It appears in meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, beans and lentils, and it is one of the three so-called branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), together with isoleucine and valine.

Each N7-Neo capsule contains 50 mg of L-leucine.

How do the amino acids sit alongside the rest of the formula?

N7-Neo is a blend of seven active ingredients in one daily capsule. The three amino acids make up one group. The other four are:

Zinc and chromium are the two ingredients with authorised wording in Great Britain. You can read about them in our zinc and chromium guide.

What about the guarana in the formula?

Guarana is a climbing plant from the Amazon basin. Its seeds naturally contain caffeine, and guarana extract is a common ingredient in drinks and supplements. If you are sensitive to caffeine, keep an eye on your total across the day, including tea, coffee, cola and energy drinks. The safety guide has more: N7-Neo safety and suitability.

Who should check with a GP first?

Amino acid supplements are for adults. N7-Neo is not recommended for under 18s. Please speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you:

How do I take N7-Neo?

Take one capsule once a day, whole, with two large glasses of water. The directions allow it 15 to 30 minutes before a meal, or with lunch or dinner. If swallowing capsules is hard, you can open one and mix the contents with water. There is more in how to take N7-Neo.

Tips for choosing amino acid supplements in the UK

  1. Read the amount per capsule for each amino acid, in milligrams.
  2. Look at the form, such as L-arginine HCl, so you know what you are buying.
  3. Check the extras in the formula, including any caffeine source.
  4. Compare cost per day rather than price per pack.
  5. Look for a guarantee. N7-Neo comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee.

Why do the doses look so small?

Milligrams are tiny. A gram is 1,000 mg, so 100 mg of L-arginine is a tenth of a gram. For comparison, a normal portion of chicken breast contains many grams of protein, made of all the amino acids put together. A capsule is a small, measured addition, not a protein shake in a shell.

Palm-sized chicken breastTens of grams of protein

What does "HCl" mean on the label?

You will see L-arginine HCl on the N7-Neo list. HCl stands for hydrochloride. It simply means the amino acid is paired with a small chloride part, which makes the powder stable and easy to put into a capsule. It is a standard form used across the supplement world.

Eating well for a full amino acid line-up

If you eat meat, fish, eggs or dairy, you get all the essential amino acids naturally. If you eat plant-based, mixing foods through the day, such as beans on wholemeal toast or lentils with rice, gives a good variety.

  1. Include a protein food at every meal.
  2. Mix your sources across the week.
  3. Add pulses to soups, stews and salads.
  4. Enjoy nuts and seeds as snacks.

Vegetarian and vegan shoppers

Plenty of British households eat plant-based, so it is a fair question. N7-Neo uses a plant-based HPMC capsule shell. For the sourcing of each ingredient, check the latest label and the seller's product information before you buy.

If you already eat plenty of protein foods, the small amounts in a capsule simply sit alongside your meals. Everyone's diet is different, so use the label as your guide and keep to the stated daily amount.
